I beg to refer to your letter, dated Downing Street the 4th instant is copy of which was sent to me by my colleague ir. E.J. Carroll, London), by which you soquaint my company Sanders, Rehder and Co. Limited, London 3.0. - that the Governor of Hongkong has reported to är. Secretary Bonar Law the resignation of its agent in Hongkong, Mr. Humphrey Cheetham; and that His Excellency, the Gover- nor, ia prepared to recognise Mesure, Reiss and Co. if my company appoint them to be our agents both at Hongkong and Canton to sell the petroleum products of the Texas Company.

ky colleague transmitted this information to me in a cable which I passed on to the Texua 0ompany while recommending to it Messrs. Reiss' appointment, and the Texas Company is willing to fall in with my recommendation, provided;

a) that Messrs. Reiss à Jo, execute, jointly with my London

Qompany, the Texas Company's regular form of contract.
